Job Description

The 4-H Camps at Tanglewood and Blueberry Cove provide environmentally focused outdoor education programs for Maine schools in Lincolnville and Tenants Harbor. Programs emphasize community living, respect for others, fun, safety, responsibility, and the joy of being a part of the natural world while meeting educational learning standards.

As an Open Air Classroom Field Teacher, you’ll provide a hands-on ecology immersion for students at one or both sites. All programming is customized and showcases our Earth Connections curriculum as well as BEETLES teaching methodology. Our Tanglewood site in Lincolnville, Maine has 900+ acres of forest, extensive hiking trails and a pristine river with native Atlantic Salmon. Our Blueberry Cove site is located on the ocean in Tenants Harbor, Maine and provides a myriad of outdoor opportunities including sailing and kayaking.

• Teach hands-on, outdoor ecology lessons to grades K- 12 for day and overnight programs based on educational standards set by each school teacher
• Work independently and with staff to develop and maintain teaching resources
• Participate actively in staff training, on-going professional development, and daily staff meetings to plan and evaluate programs
• Contribute ideas for continual development of programs, interpretive trails, and educational displays
• Take part in routine tasks of cleaning and kitchen duties, gardening, general camp chores, and upkeep of program spaces to support the staff community
• Foster interpersonal relationships that reflect courtesy, civility, and mutual respect
• Demonstrate responsible and safe decision-making skills
• Work full time Monday morning through Friday afternoon with rotating evening and weekend program responsibilities

• Experiential education experience with youth, preferably in an outdoor setting
• Knowledge of ecological concepts and natural history
• Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification, Wilderness First Aid preferred (or ability to get before employment)
• Ability to work in an active, outdoor environment in a variety of weather conditions
• Ability to safely lead groups over various terrain (uneven ground, roots, uphill hiking), while carrying a small backpack with teaching and first aid supplies
• Professional appearance and attitude

First season salary is $325/week with step increases based on experience. Benefits include shared, rustic housing (optional), meals during overnight programs, laundry, internet access, and camping equipment usage. Tanglewood and Blueberry Cove positions qualify for internships in any program season.

Fall 2019 staff training begins Tuesday, September 3rd with the on-site program season wrapping up October 25th. Occasional work may be available on an as-needed basis during the Winter and successful field teachers are encouraged to return for the Spring, Summer, or Fall season the following year.
