Program Overview and Job Summary:
KSS offers a range of programs that provide a balance of hands-on science activities, field-based exploration, and adventure programming. All programs are based upon a theme including but not limited to aquatic ecology, forest ecology, earth science, snow science, health, diversity & inclusion, and leadership.

The Adventure Program Instructor works with Keystone Mountain Adventures (KMA) and Keystone Voyagers (KV) residential off-site camping programs. KMA is a wilderness- based program, designed to take high school-aged youth into the backcountry for extended trips around and outside of Colorado. Instruction focuses on wilderness skills, Leave-No-Trace ethics, science curriculum, and leadership. Programs are 12 days in length. KV is an adventure program, taking middle and high school-aged campers to remote base-camps in Colorado. Instruction focuses on camping skills, growing personal confidence through challenge activities (i.e. rafting, rock climbing, hiking), Leave-No-Trace ethics and science curriculum. Programs are 6 days in length. The Adventure Program Instructor is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and facilitating a variety of camping and backpacking activities. They are also responsible for guiding children in their personal growth and daily living skills. It is also the responsibility of the Adventure Program Instructor to be completely familiar with the daily schedule, best risk management practices, emergency action plan, and the overall energy of the KMA and KV programs.

Main areas of focus:
– 75% Teaching;
– 15% Lesson planning and curriculum development;
– 10% Support staff duties (e.g. facilitation of meals, set up/clean up, transportation, student free time);

Our ideal candidate will focus on the following essential duties and responsibilities:
– Plan, prepare, and teach grade appropriate curricula;
– Plan and implement hard skills associated with multi-day backpacking trips (packing, camp set-up/take-down, outdoor cooking, orienteering, and risk management);
– Supervise up to 13 children of mixed gender;
– Plan and prepare supplies and meals for KMA and KV trips;
– Clean, repair and inventory gear after trip completion;
– Supervise and maintain high standards of health and safety, and follow Risk Management policies in all activities;
– Attend and help facilitate wilderness trainings for Instructors, and attend all staff meetings and trainings as assigned;
– Oversee the successful execution of logistic and operational tasks for adventure programs, which includes but is not limited to: schedules, trip routes, emergency action plans, menus, etc.;
– Oversee preparation for adventure program trips (food, gear, Emergency Action Plans, etc.);
– Administer client medications and manage First Aid;
– Practice and engage in risk managament;
– Gather and submit pictures and videos to reflect the experience children have during KSS programs;
– Gather information and journal about each trip to be used in trip debriefs and for future trip planning;
– Provide an electronics-free experience for all children;
– Set up before children arrive and clean up after children depart from KSS campus;
– Maintain storage of all KSS equipment, including teaching materials, gear, keys, toys, etc.;
– Candidates age 21+ with a minimum of 5 years driving experience will be required to participate in and pass Van Driver Training, and they will be required to drive a 15-passenger van;
– Abide by and uphold the policies and procedures set forth by KSS;
– Other duties as assigned.

The minimum requirements in knowledge, skills, and abilities for the candidate of our choice:

– Write incident reports and lesson plans with attention to detail.

Our required education, experience, and certifications:
– Minimum of 5 overnight trips, professionally leading/guiding participants in a wilderness/backcountry setting;
– Minimum 460 hours working with school aged children;
– Demonstrated experience with risk management practices of the outdoor and environmental education industry;
– Current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and CPR certifications, from an approved vendor, or the ability to obtain before the first day of employment;
– Age 21 with an excellent driving record and a valid driver’s license;
– Must be able to successfully pass a comprehensive background check.

In addition to the above required talents, our ideal candidate will have these preferred skillsets:
– Waterfront Lifeguard certification;
– Desired computer skills include proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.) and Adobe;
– Comprehension of the Spanish language via written and/or verbal form.

Travel Expectations:
There will be significant travel in Summit County and around Colorado, and some travel outside the state.
