Location: White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire (Carter Notch, Madison Spring, Lakes of the Clouds, Mizpah Spring, Zealand Falls, Galehead, Greenleaf, Lonesome Lake)
Supervision: Huts Manager and Field Supervisors
Job Dates: May 25, 2020 – August 20, 2020 (preference will be given to qualified applicants who can commit to work this full range of dates)

The Appalachian Mountain Club’s backcountry huts serve as a source of information, accommodation, and aid for many of the thousands of hikers who visit New Hampshire’s White Mountains every year. The huts are a popular, public-facing resource for the AMC, one of the country’s longest operating conservation non-profit organizations, and play a vital role in the club’s mission of promoting recreation, environmental stewardship and outdoor education to the public. The hut crews support this mission by providing an unforgettable experience for all hut visitors, from crafting homemade meals, to presenting nightly naturalist programs. Working on a hut crew is an incredibly rewarding experience, and we are now accepting applications to work during the 2020 Summer season!

All hut positions require excellent guest service skills, backcountry familiarity, and a commitment to the goals of AMC. Employees are expected to continue the traditions of High Mountain Hospitality: providing good company, great food, and clean, comfortable accommodations to all. Just as important, you will be a member of a close-knit crew that lives and works together for the duration of the season which requires the whole crew to contribute to a positive, respectful, and inclusive community supported by open communication and effective group feedback discussions. Daily assignments (cooking, packing in supplies, cleaning, morning and evening support, interpretive programs) are all shared and will be organized by the resident Hutmaster (onsite location manager). The standard work schedule is 11 days on at the hut with 3 days off.

Primary Responsibilities:
– Provide a positive hut experience for all day and overnight guests.
– Share in the cooking and baking responsibilities for our daily guest breakfast and dinner meals (36-90 guests depending on hut placement)
– Hike food and supplies to the hut (40 pounds or more) twice a week.
– Present educational programs for overnight guests.
– Answer questions and give trail advice at the hut information desk.
– Clean public spaces, sleeping quarters, and bathrooms daily.
– Prepare, serve and clean up after breakfast and dinner.
– Greet, register, and assist overnight guests.
– Handle transactions of retail items and basic backcountry supplies, while appropriately reconciling accounts nightly.
– Voluntarily participate in search and rescue operations.

Qualifications & Experience:
– Due to hours worked, applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
– Demonstrated ability to live and work closely within a community made up of a small staff of 4-10 coworkers.
– Friendly, outgoing manner and commitment to positive guest service.
– Backcountry travel experience, or at least comfort not having immediate access to internet, cell coverage and roadside amenities necessary.
– Knowledge of White Mountains and/or Leave-No-Trace principles, desirable but not necessary.
– Wilderness medical certification and CPR certification (Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness First Responder, etc.), preferable.
– Environmental education/interpretation experience, desirable but not necessary.
– Restaurant experience (Front or Back of House) and/or housekeeping experience, desirable but not necessary.

The AMC requires all employees who work in a program or facility which serves children, disabled persons or the elderly to have a criminal background record check performed on their name annually with employment contingent upon satisfactory results.
