Other Outdoor Archaeological Research Associate
Working cooperatively with the National Park Service’s Death Valley National Park (DEVA), the Great Basin Institute is recruiting an (1) Archeological Research Associate (RA) to join our program and assist DEVA archaeology staff with archaeological field work and data processing. The RA will support a variety of cultural resource projects. As part of the analysis required by the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) for potential ground disturbing projects, a Section 106 of NHPA cultural resource evaluation must be completed to evaluate effects to federally owned historic and prehistoric sites. In order to complete these specialist reports, surveys for archaeological resources need to be completed for all proposed projects.
The RA will implement all stages of the archaeological survey process, which includes: pre-field review (search of archaeological databases to determine if the area had been surveyed before and if there are any known archaeological sites in the area), intensive archaeological pedestrian surveys (cultural properties will be fully inventoried, recorded, and GPSed), site documentation, and development of the final reports.

o Eight month appointment beginning September/October 2018, or upon completion of a Department of Interior background investigation
o 40 hours per week; some overtime and weekend work may occasionally be required
Death Valley National Park is located in Nevada and California and boasts some of the hottest and driest climates, and lowest elevation in North America. A superlative desert of streaming sand dunes, snow-capped mountains, multicolored rock layers, water-fluted canyons and 3 million acres of wilderness. Home to the Timbisha Shoshone people and to plants and animals unique to the harshest desert.
Shared housing in the park may be available (dorm style accommodations with shared bedroom/no pets) at an affordable rate, otherwise the closest available accommodations are in Pahrump or Beatty, Nevada (both approximately 1 hour away).
o Degree in Archaeology or related field, Master’s degree desirable;
o Field experiences related to archaeology, anthropology, or indigenous peoples studies – in particular, historic and prehistoric Mojave Desert archaeology;
o Ability to understand, implement and adhere to established data collection, inventory, recording, and monitoring protocols;
o Capacity to collect and maintain field data in an organized manner that is easily understood and accessible to other resources staff (GBI or NPS);
o Experience completing archeological site forms (or portions of site forms) and/or entering site form data in to database programs;
o Experience preparing, reviewing and writing reports;
o Ability to utilize ArcGIS software to build maps, organize and manage data, and manipulate data layers;
o Experience operating hand-held GPS equipment for navigation and electronic field data collection; experience post-processing field data, a plus;
o Read and interpret topographical maps and navigate using a compass;
o Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license with ability to safely operate and maintain a 4WD vehicle on and off paved roads;
o Ability to work productively and cooperatively as part of a team focused on accomplishing mutual goals and communicate effectively, both written and orally, with a diverse audience;
o Flexibility and capability to meet the demands of rapidly changing plans and schedules;
o Possess good organizational skills and be detail oriented; and
o Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, camp in the backcountry for consecutive days, work in all types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, carry a heavy pack in excess of 35-45 lbs, and be in overall good physical condition; prior experience working in the desert southwest, or similar desert climates, desirable.
