Other Outdoor Community and School Programs Staff Internship

Job Description

Interns will:

• log thousands of hours of experience working directly with youth, facilitating experiential education programs
• learn to successfully lead and interact with extremely diverse youth populations, including participants all over the age, ability, racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and gender spectrums
• learn about the structure and operation of a 501(c)(3) charitable organization
• form deep perspectives & philosophies regarding youth, society, and education
• build priceless relationships with distinct, yet like-minded people who share strong values and ideals


when facilitating programs (most frequent role): leading experiential, environmental, and recreational group activities, leading discussions, managing safety and learning on ropes courses

when coordinating programs (up to twice per semester):
professional communication with program contacts, creating schedules, prep lists, and briefings for facilitators, managing fellow staff, giving feedback and leading post-program reflections

when supporting programs (several times per semester):
supporting program objectives by preparing program spaces for use, hanging climbing ropes, delivering materials to facilitators, leading or supporting program activities

non-program responsibilities & opportunities:
program area preparation and closure, possible independent and collaborative projects to advance AYF, staff development workshops, off-site development opportunities, regional conferences

Ideal Applicants

Merrowvista is looking for caring, energetic people who are invested in working with youth, and committed to fostering growth within themselves and those around them. Our team is strongest when it is comprised of passionate, creative, and adventurous people.

Applicants must:

• be 21 years of age & have one year of higher education or equivalent experience
• be First Aid and CPR certified throughout the duration of the position
• have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record
• be able to lead two mile hikes in the mountains and lift over 25 lbs.
• have experience working in the outdoors and with youth

Beneficial experience:

ropes courses, environmental education, classroom teaching, summer camps, mentoring, outdoor programming, lifeguarding, wilderness medicine certification

Internship dates:

• fall semester internship: August 20, 2018 – November 19, 2018
• full-year internship: fall + spring semester (January – June 2019)
• strong opportunity to roll into subsequent summer and fall employment
