Job Description

In cooperation with the National Park Service (NPS) Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, the Great Basin Institute (GBI) is recruiting a videographer to work as a Digital Media Research Associate. Collaborating with NPS staff, the Research Associate will assist in the development and storyboarding of video projects. This will include:
• Assisting in planning, directing, and shooting new video, including interviews and B roll;
• Providing existing stock video;
• Editing each video and providing rough-cut and fine-cut review for NPS;
• Adding music when appropriate;
• Posting the final versions to YouTube; and
• Coordinating the social media launch of each episode.

The Digital Media Research Associate will also assist with developing education and interpretation products including, researching, writing, and designing layout of media products, assisting with coordinating social media postings, and assisting with photographing and documenting the Monument.

Additionally, opportunities will be provided to participate in other interpretive projects and activities.

o 6-month appointment beginning August/September 2018, or pending availability and completion of DOI Background Investigation
o Full time, 40 hours per week; overtime and/or weekend hours may be required occasionally

Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument is located on the northtern edge of the Grand Canyon, in the northwest corner of Arizona, bordering Nevada to the west and near the southern border of Utah. The Monument is located at the junction of the Colorado Plateau and the Basin and Range. Individually, these regions contain ecosystems extreme to each other, ranging from stark, arid desert to complex, dramatic higher elevation plateaus, tributaries, and rims of the Grand Canyon. The monument also contains outstanding biological resources, historic and prehistoric cultural sites, and threatened and/or endangered species habitat preserved by its remote location and limited travel corridors.

The Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument office is located in St. George, Utah. The Research Associate will be based out of St. George and while housing is not provided, apartments are located near the office at a reasonable rental rate. St. George is often refferred to as a place that has big city amenities but a small town feel, and is home to many parks, several recreation areas, as well as many miles of urban trail systems. The city of St. George is situated near a unique geological transition zone where the Mojave, Colorado Plateau, and Great Basin all converge.

Technical requirements:
o Extensive Adobe Premiere experience and knowledge;
o Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and Audition;
o Extensive DSLR video production experience;
o Experience working with a variety of video techniques and styles;
o Knowledge of and experience with various audio and lighting equipment;
o Ability to develop and create brief video podcasts and informational clips, from pre-production to post;
o Experience uploading videos to online websites; and
o An understanding of interpretation principles.
Additional Requirements:
o Experience living or working in, and/or knowledge of desert ecosystems and natural/cultural resources, desirable;
o Ability to work in all types of weather and terrain in the harsh desert environment;
o Ability to camp and work in extremely remote environments for days at a time;
o Familiarity with backcountry, low-impact principles preferred;
o Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license with ability to safely operate and maintain a 4WD vehicle on and off paved roads;
o Experience driving 4X4 vehicles in rugged terrain;
o Ability to communicate clearly and efficiently with the public, coworkers, and Technical Advisors both orally and in writing, and respond in a professional manner to inquiries from the public regarding work activities;
o Motivated, detail-oriented, self-starter that has the flexibility to handle competing and changing priorities and possesses strong organizational skills;
o Ability to speak English and Spanish conversationally, desired; and
o Ability to pass National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR) and federal criminal background checks.
Successful applicant must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to NPS human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position.
