Job Description

The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge Complex (NWRC), is recruiting one technician to support Phase 2 of Stillwater’s Natural Resource Management Plan (NRMP). Drawing on work completed by a GBI intern in 2016, the NRMP Technician will support multiple projects associated with Phase 2 of this effort, including:
1. Cross referencing and reviewing a summary database and Stillwater NWRC Comprehensive Conservation Plan to develop a draft Resources of Concern (ROC) table and threats to these resources into summary documents;
2. Participating as part of an inter-agency team to evaluate Resources of Concern (ROC). Develop and provide a written summary report for ROC and associated threats. Input relevant information and data into an electronic dataset (Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Access) provided by refuge staff; and
3. Compile relevant information from other available data sources and centralized repositories and input relevant information and data into an electronic dataset; and
4. In collaboration with refuge staff, review existing ServCat records to determine access levels (public, internal FWS or specific individuals). In addition, identify additional records to add to the ServCat.

Contract Timeline:
• 45-week appointment beginning in October 2017
• Part-time, 20-24 hours per week

The Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge(NWR) Complex is composed of three wildlife refuges, which are part of the over 560 National Wildlife Refuges that make up the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS). Stillwater NWR and Fallon NWR are located in Churchill County, Nevada, approximately 16 miles northeast and 20 miles to the north, respectively, of Fallon, Nevada. Anaho Island NWR is located within Pyramid Lake, Washoe County, Nevada, approximately 35 miles northeast of Reno, Nevada. Collectively, these refuges serve as critical stopover locations for migratory birds moving along the Pacific flyway.

Compensation and Benefits:
• Rate of pay: $19/hr
• No-cost FWS housing located approx. 20 miles to NE of Fallon, Nevada

Job Qualifications:
• College degree, coursework towards a degree, and/or field experience related to natural resource management, including biology (wildlife), landscape ecology, environmental planning, or related coursework;
• Clear understanding of natural resources conservation principles and scientific method;
• Willingness to work in an indoor office setting;
• Ability to problem solve and work independently within guidance provided for project, while at the same time possessing a willingness to request additional/clarifying guidance as needed;
• Knowledge of data management, and willingness to conduct data entry;
• Possess good organizational skills; and
• Valid, state-issued driver’s license.
• Ability to successfully pass security background check
