Intern –Outdoor Program

The mission of the Outdoor Program is to provide a gateway for students and members to enjoy the great outdoors, while emphasizing skill acquisition, risk management, positive group dynamics, environmental awareness, and fun. The University of Colorado Boulder Outdoor Program consists of an indoor climbing gym, outdoor equipment rental center, adventure planning center, challenge course, and a variety of adventure trips and clinics. These diverse offerings provide students, faculty and staff with a plethora of resources to become involved in outdoor adventures.

The University of Colorado Boulder Outdoor Program Intern will play an integral role within the trip and challenge course programs. They will provide assistance and leadership for outdoor program and challenge course offerings in the areas of program development and management. This position is an hourly paid internship, May through November.

Responsibilities include:

Assistance with Operation of Outdoor Program Administration and Operation: (40%)
• Adventure Trip Program (Incoming Student and Fall Semester)
o Assist with the planning and implementation of the Incoming Student/Orientation Trips.
o Assist with a variety of trip leader trainings and staff in-services.
o Act as field manager for the CU Bound and Mountain Fest Incoming Student Trips.
o Co – lead Fall Semester trips and courses in the following areas:
* Backpacking, Climbing, WW Kayaking, Mountaineering, Fly- Fishing
o Implement, collect, and process trip and clinic assessments.
o Act as Wilderness First Responder liaison as needed.
o Assist with program administrative duties as assigned.

• Challenge Course Administration and Operation (40%)
o Facilitate CUOP Challenge Course programs during Summer and Fall seasons.
o Assist with scheduling groups.
o Develop and implement group programs.
o Perform course maintenance.
o Assist with Staff Trainings.
o Implement, collect, and process program assessments.

• Climbing Gym and Rental Center (10%)
o Instruct top – rope and lead belay classes and trainings
o Assist with the development and management of the student staff schedule.
o Perform gym inspections and maintenance.
o Develop and implement climbing gym staff in-services and trainings.
o Assist with planning and implementation of climbing competition.
o Route set bouldering and roped routes.
o Inspect and repair rental equipment.
o Promote and oversee the Adventure Planning Center.

• Other Duties as Assigned: (9%)
o Assist in Recreation Services projects, events, and assigned duties as requested.

• Recreation program and facilities quality control (1%)
o This position participates in the development of ideas and suggestions for program and facility improvement. The position is required to attend Recreation Center classes or programs, and use various facilities and equipment periodically to ensure that they are meeting or exceeding the standards of the department.

• Minimum:
o Wilderness First Responder Certification or ability to obtain before start of summer.
o Currently enrolled in college or possess an undergraduate degree.
o Challenge Course facilitation experience.
o Experience instructing and leading climbing trips
o Experience leading one or more of the following:
*WW Kayaking, Backpacking, Mountaineering, Fly-Fishing
o Climbing gym staff experience with both roped climbing and bouldering.
o Driver’s license, ability to obtain Commercial Motor Vehicle certification and DOT medical card, ability to drive a 12 person van and drive vehicles while towing a trailer.

• Preferred:
o Level I Assoc. for Challenge Course Technology challenge course Facilitator certification or over 200 documented hours of facilitation.
o American Mountain Guide Assoc. or Professional Climbing Instructors Assoc. single pitch instructor certification.
o Climbing Wall Assoc. or AMGA climbing wall instructor certification.
o American Canoe Assoc. white water kayak Level III or greater certification.
o Undergraduate degree related to adventure programming.
Benefits and compensation
o Pay Rate: $11-$13 p/hr based on qualifications.
o Hours/Week: 30-40 with some nights and weekends required.
o Start Date: May 2017(Exact start date flexible); End Date: November 30, 2017
o WMI WFR or WFR Re-cert tuition waiver.
o 40 hours of challenge course training in low and high elements and rescue.
o Ability to participate in OP program offerings and trainings.
o Recreation Center Professional Development offerings.
o Commercial Motor Vehicle training.
o Experience: after completion of this internship you will have a greater understanding of the workings of a collegiate program, experience designing and leading a wide variety of trips and challenge course programs, along with greater management and training development experience.
o Boulder is very bike and bus friendly with bike and bus routes running throughout. Boulder has world class climbing within 15 minutes from campus, class II to IV kayaking on Boulder Creek, and is a little over an hour from Rocky Mountain National Park and has the Flatirons as its backdrop to the west.
o Internship does not offer benefits package or housing.
