Environment Outdoor Recreation Instructor
You love adventure, enjoy long hikes in tropical jungles and like to take risks but know when to put safety first. You have experience teaching and feel comfortable being a leader and mentor to groups of young adults, and can find ways to educate in informal and unexpected settings. You are optimistic and resourceful. You hike in the rain, you take notes on notebooks because computers aren’t working, and you make a trip to the swimming hole an educational lesson. You have a strong interest in how entrepreneurship, social impact, and outdoor recreation intersect; whether that’s outlining an ecotourism business with your students or offering leadership training and workshops to neighboring communities. Perhaps most importantly, you are a builder and a doer. In Kalu Yala, we like to build things and you need to love building fires, businesses, morale, skills, trails, and a sustainable community.
You feel comfortable leading 10 university level students for a 10-week semester, teaching them about outdoor recreation in an off-the-grid wilderness environment. Each week there will be 5 hours of traditional education in the form of lecture or seminar based learning. For 15 hours each week, you will facilitate your students as you lead them in your own Kalu Yala based outdoor recreation project utilizing the experiential learning model. 10 hours are reserved for you to support your students pursuing independent projects that serve the community and build off skills learned in class. You are also responsible for administration and planning of lessons as well as accessing communications and documenting. Though we are in an off-the-grid setting, there is still a need for using technology and communicating with other venues and administration.
