Environment Marine Conservation Project Manager – Fiji

Job Description

Set in the Idyllic island of Beqa, Fiji Frontier is looking for an outstanding individual to lead our Fiji marine conservation programme.

The aim of Frontier-Fiji Marine Conservation Project is to better understand the marine resources of the island of Beqa, and to provide teaching and training to encourage sustainable development and empower local communities to make informed decisions regarding their development and the management of their coastal ecosystems.

To achieve this mission, we conduct scientific baseline data surveys of reef areas. We also monitor megafauna such as sea turtle, sharks and rays which all play a key role in the Fijian marine ecosystem and monitor mangrove restoration. Once a long-term data set is obtained, we can publish scientific reports and analyse the data. Patterns of resource use can then be identified and we can work with local communities can begin to build awareness of the value and vulnerability of their marine environment.

The Project Coordinator will work alongside the Principal Investigator and Dive Officer, having overall administrative control of the field projects including volunteer communications; financial management; equipment resupply and maintenance; regular reporting back to headquarters; aiding in volunteer and staff recruitment; management of local relations, networks and contacts; fundraising for the project and the supervision of local staff.

Key responsibilities include:

– To ensure the health and safety of all volunteers and field staff involved in the project, dealing with any medical incidents should they arise, being ready to initiate and implement an emergency medical evacuation procedure if necessary.

– Management, support and development of volunteers / research assistants in all aspects of their participation on the project.

– Organisation and supervision of camp activities and the schedule of Research Assistants camp duties. Preparation of a camp work schedule taking into account all relevant safety, physical, logistic and financial considerations.

– To manage local Frontier employees, camp assistant, driver, guards, as appropriate including payment of wages as and when necessary.

– Administration and control of project budget, ensuring that expenditure does not exceed allocated funds.

– To develop proposals for work with other potential sites/organizations (including site visits and meetings as and when required).
