Environment Strike Team Crew Member: Invasive Species Control

Southwest Conservation Corps – Posted by tditore Durango, Colorado, United States

Job Description

Position Dates: May 28th – September 21st, with possibility to extend into the fall season
Wages: $400 weekly + AmeriCorps Education Award

Be a part of a small strike team implementing invasive species control work primarily on the GMUG National Forest in the Norwood Ranger District, with secondary measures to work with other local watershed restoration groups. Species targeted for control include Sulfur cinquefoil (Potentilla recta), Musk thistle (Carduus nutans), Bull thistle (Cirsium vulgar), and Oxeye daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare). These species are invading and altering natural ecosystems contributing to declines in ecological health of the San Miguel watershed in which they are found. Additional restoration work may target Russian olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia) and other noxious weeds.

Work will take place over a 16 week period. The team will target infestations as guided by District Rangeland Management Specialists on a prioritized basis. Recording and reporting of accomplishments will be necessary. This position requires extensive field time on foot in the elements and extensive time wearing a backpack sprayer. When weather or climatic conditions do not allow for invasive species control work, additional work contributing to trails maintenance will occur.

Our programs focus on place based learning, life skills development, appreciation of diversity, civic responsibility and career development. SCC also provides an opportunity for Corpsmembers to learn about the local environment, environmental issues and introduces individuals to recreation and resource management careers. Members are eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of their term. When not in the field, members are expected to find their own housing.
