Summer ushers in a 12-week whirlwind of summer camps for children ages 5-12. A Summer CIT Mentor is responsible for working as part of the field team to successfully deliver summer day camp programs in service of the Schoolhouse mission. This position is responsible for working as part of the program team to successfully implement leadership training for all Counselors in Training (CITs) during summer camp.
A Schoolhouse of Wonder CIT Mentor takes pride and joy in mentoring CITs through training, coaching, and delivering feedback. A CIT Mentor is a mentor worth remembering and emulating.
This position begins May 17th and runs through August 24th.
General Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
•Safeguarding the physical, emotional, and intellectual safety of CITs – model Schoolhouse values, engage all participants (in their group), deliver consistent and exceptional supervision of teens, patiently process conflict and disagreements
•Participation – participate in all aspects of programs in accordance with Schoolhouse methodologies including the active engagement of CITs as a good example and role model at all times – play the games, sing the songs, wade in the river, hide in the leaves, build forts, and actively participate in all aspects of programs
•Communication – establish trusted lines of communication with CITs, their families, and other Schoolhouse staff
•Providing exemplary adherence to Schoolhouse’s values, policies, and procedures
•Activity creation and delivery– partner with the Camp Leads to create and implement high-quality, exciting, nature-based activities for camps
•Setting an excellent example in teaching and behavior management methods, work ethic, and attitude
•Serving as a mentor and a resource, as needed, to other Schoolhouse staff (e.g. area of special knowledge or interest)
•Participate in trainings and staff meetings
•Working with your supervisor to design and implement a professional development plan, including continuing education and familiarity with best practices
Camp Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
•Mentor all CITs throughout summer camp season; create and deliver feedback, establish personal goals with the CITs, and implement weekly performance evaluations to assess progress against CIT goals
•Assist CITs in creating and implementing personal leadership goals
•Partner with other program staff and supervisor to ensure success and quality performance by CITs
•Assist in leading and implementing CIT summer training
•Setting an excellent example of teaching and behavior management methods, work ethic, and attitude
•Communicating effectively with participants, CITs, staff, and parents

•A college degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience in a relevant field (e.g. child development, youth leadership)
•Teaching experience, especially with teens
•A strong interest in/knowledge of plants, animals, geology, ecology, and/or cultural history
•Knowledge of experiential and inquiry-based learning techniques
A formal review will be conducted by the supervisor to establish and assess progress against employee goals. Ongoing feedback provided through regular supervision and work plan development/review sessions.

The Schoolhouse of Wonder office is currently located at West Point on the Eno Park, 5101 N. Roxboro Street, Durham, NC 27704.
The work of the Wake Summer CIT Mentor in Wake is typically performed at Umstead State Park, I-40 Reedy Creek Entrance, 1800 N. Harrison Avenue, Cary, NC, 27513.
Travel to off-site locations is occasionally required.
Regular hours typically fall between 7:30a – 6p Monday through Friday during Summer Camp from June through August. Hours are dependent on organizational needs, and typically total between 40 and 50 hours per week. Occasional weekends and/or evenings may be required.
The wage for this position is $12.00 per hour. Benefits include professional development opportunities, unlimited vitamin D, and a steady stream of (mostly funny) stories.
Current certification in CPR and First Aid and successful background check required before work can begin. Schoolhouse will pursue both indicated and non-indicated references
This is an “at will” seasonal, non-exempt, hourly position that reports directly to the Wake County Site Manager (Wake), Regional Program Manager (Durham), or Orange County Site Manager (Orange).
