Title: USDA Forest Service Special Uses Resource Assistant

Start/End Date: October 26th, 2020 – August 27th, 2021

Stipend: $636 /week (+Education Award)

Term: 44 weeks

Reports To: US Forest Service – Carson National Forest

Location: 208 Cruz Alta Road, Taos, NM 87571

Status: 1700-hour AmeriCorps Service Term

Benefits: AmeriCorps Education Award $6,095.00 after successful completion

Program Description:

Join the Southwest Conservation Corps’ intern team and help the US Forest Service carry out its mission to prioritize sustainable recreational opportunities that will unite diverse interests, create and strengthen partnerships, provide in shared stewardship opportunities, and maintain and improve public access. The Carson National Forest Receives many permit applications annually for a varied group of activities. Specifically, outfitting and guiding, as well as other commercial recreation focused requests that contribute to the local economy. Outfitters and guides provide critical help in maintaining our recreation resources, whether it be light trail maintenance, dispersed site clean-up, or the environmental education provided to each customer.

This program includes working with a variety of interests including Public Services, Recreation, Lands and Wilderness Recreation and Lands Special Uses. This position will have an emphasis on assisting in the development of priority use permits for outfitters and guides. The intern will assist in the following:

Work closely with the winter sports coordinator on critical monitoring needs and document findings
Work with other disciplines in their participation of the interpretive program
Develop and present interpretive materials to the visiting public in the winter resorts
File review, data collection, mapping and field inspection for each permit to be issued
Data entry into the Special uses database system
Permit package preparation, document review, correspondence, and mailing
Conduct field inspections related to various land uses
GPS mapping
Batching and processing expired lands permits including file review, document scanning, and field inspections
Provide general assistance to the recreation and lands program as needed
The intern will be provided with opportunities to get a broad perspective of the Agency through showing and participating in field work with other disciplines, including wildlife and archaeology. If other specific interests are identified by the inter the effort will also be made to expose them to that discipline. The intern will also receive training pertaining to special uses.

General Qualifications:

The successful applicant must be self-motivated and able to work independently with limited supervision after the initial training period. The applicant must be able to maneuver and operate in a mixture of office and field work. This can include long periods of standing or walking on rough, uneven ground, bending, crouching, and stooping. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and be able to dive on low standard and high-clearance roads. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with ArcMap/GIS Mapping
Experience with snow sports
