Environment Veteran Natural Resources Intern Supervisor

Spend your spring working and camping outside in some of Nevada’s premier natural areas as a Veteran Natural Resources Team Supervisor with the Nevada Conservation Corps (NCC). Serve alongside fellow veteran and civilian AmeriCorps volunteers while making a lasting contribution to Nevada’s natural heritage. Gain valuable field experience while working on habitat improvement, restoration, and recreation projects with the Bureau of Land Management and local public land agencies in the Southern Nevada. Potential conservation projects may include recreational trail construction and maintenance, exotic species removal, habitat restoration, riparian restoration, illegal road decommissioning and more. The NCC strives to contribute real and meaningful improvements to Nevada’s public lands by focusing on on-the-ground implementation of conservation projects. As a member you will be in the field, swinging tools, planting plants, and getting your hands dirty every day of service. The NCC is looking for members that understand the value of hard work and are ready to get in the field and get things done.
Members will be based out of GBI’s Las Vegas office. The Intern team will work on various projects this season at Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area, Basin and Range National Monument and at the newly created Gold Butte National Monument. Members will learn about conservation, restoration and monitoring of public lands. The teams schedule will fluctuate between 4 and 8-day tours. While on tour, you will camp at the project site, sharing in campsite responsibilities, cooking meals with fellow team members, and participating in group discussions and learning activities around the campfire. This shared responsibility and team bonding is an important part of NCC member development strategy, and has contributed not only to the success of the program, but also to the formation of friendships and a passion for conservation work that last long after members finish their service.
During the term of service, members will receive valuable training and certifications in:
Leave No Trace ethics;
Wilderness First Aid and CPR; and
S-212 equivalent Chain Saw Training
In addition, NCC staff and supervisors offer continuing on-the-job training to improve member’s technical and soft skills, and facilitating learning modules to educate members about the work we do and the areas we serve. The NCC also organizes educational opportunities with agency project partners and industry professionals, providing members with an inside look at the management strategies and technical research behind our project work.

You will be based out of the Las Vegas Field Station.
Note: Housing and transportation during off days is not provided by the Nevada Conservation Corps and will be your sole responsibility. We highly recommend you have your own personal vehicle with you.
Compensation and Benefits:
$1,280.00 salary paid every two weeks
Affordable Care Act Compliant Health, Dental and Vision Insurance will be completely paid for by the Great Basin Institute at no cost to you and will be available upon your first day of employment.
• Possess the desire and drive to perform meaningful conservation work on a variety of projects throughout southern Nevada.
• Must maintain a positive and professional attitude at all times while providing service.
• Be able to communicate effectively with members, supervisors, NCC staff, and project partners.
• Show respect when interacting with other members, leaders, staff, project sponsors and community members.
• Be over 17 years of age
• Be a US citizen
• Be a Veteran of the US Military, desired. If so, have the ability to provide DD214 papers.
• Must possess a high school diploma or GED
• Clean driving record (must qualify to drive GBI Vehicles);
• Current driver’s license;
• All position offers are conditional upon completion of an acceptable check of the National Sex Offender Public Registry and federal criminal background check.
• Leadership experience, including supervising crews or groups while managing projects simultaneously;
• A willingness and desire to lead others;
• Experience working within a Conservation or Youth Corps, desirable;
• Previous experience camping/backpacking in remote locations;
• Previous experience constructing and/or maintaining recreational trails, desirable;
• GPS experience, desirable;
• Strong critical thinking skills and creativity;
• Possessing the confidence and ability to make decisions quickly and under pressure;
• Receptive to feedback from superiors, peers, and subordinates;
• Ability to establish and maintain a positive workplace culture and camp life experience.
• Ability to work for 10.5 hours a day and to contribute to post-work day tasks and chores;
• Ability to hike up to 10 miles a day with heavy backpacks;
• Ability to carry 25 pounds continuously and 50 pounds occasionally;
• Possess the willingness and ability to work and camp up to seven nights in a row, in a wilderness setting, in all weather conditions, without formal restroom facilities or running water;
• Assisting in food preparation, planning, and clean up;
• Ability to effectively operate machinery and tools while following production and quality standards set by the Nevada Conservation Corps;
• Follow strict safety protocol and maintain personal safety of self and others
