Environment Visitor Center Coordinator

The Taylor Creek Visitor Center (TCVC) serves as the primary visitor center for the 154,000 acres of National Forest Lands surrounding Lake Tahoe. The site staff offer the following services: recreational opportunity information, wilderness permits, and interpretive programs from walks to amphitheater programs for the general public, children, and special groups on subjects related to the natural history of Lake Tahoe. Over 150,000 people entered the Visitor Center during the 2019 operating season, with approximately 650,000 visitors on site annually. Taylor Creek is located just outside the city limits of South Lake Tahoe, CA; operated within Public Services at the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) of the Forest Service (FS). The USDA Forest Service is dedicated to ‘Caring for the land and serving the people.’
Job Description and Duties:
• Support the visitor store operations, including but not limited to purchasing, receiving, tracking of inventory, cash draw management, and maintaining sufficient store merchandise for the public.
• Provide information to the public
• Lead interpretive programs, and deliver conservation education messaging.
• Maintenance duties such as trail oversight/maintenance, daily restroom cleaning and garbage pick up
• Respond to visitors on the phone and in writing
• File and help with day-to-day tasks
• Individual projects may be assigned based on the needs of the site, and the areas of interest of the intern. Interns are provided as much structure with their schedule as possible but some flexibility must be assumed.
• Visitor Center staff, interns and volunteers are expected to work weekend, holiday and evening shifts. Interns occupy the same office as the Site Manager, and can look forward to learning about the full breadth of activities and skills needed to run a visitor center that serves a highly visible recreation area. All staff and volunteers bring a sense of enthusiasm and humor to the site; it is a great team to work with and a beautiful place to spend the summer.
• Recreation, Natural Resources, Outdoor Education, Environmental Sciences, Customer Service, Education, and students from related fields are encouraged to apply.
• Applicants must have a demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision
• Strong customer service skills
• Willingness to work on variable projects under a variety of conditions, including working outdoors.
• Interest in outdoor recreation and natural history is desirable, specific training will be provided as part of the internship.
• Applicant must be comfortable with public speaking and working outdoors.
Compensation and Benefits:
• This is an AmeriCorps position and candidates will receive a living Stipend of $250/Week
• Upon successful completion of the 900-hr AmeriCorps service term, members shall receive one Segal AmeriCorps Education Award in the amount of $3,047.50 that can be used for paying off student loans, or paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college.

Timeline: 23-week positon starting on June 3rd and extending through November 8th. Opportunity to start part time operations in April if candidate is available.
