Job Description

We are seeking a motivated, responsible and dependable individual to join Outer Island Excursion’s (OIE) team as a boat Captain. OIE is based on Orcas Island in the heart of the San Juan Islands of Washington State. People from all over the world come to this beautiful region to experience the great outdoors. We offer authentic wildlife experiences including kayaking, fishing, whale watching, and much more. Captains safely and responsibly operate vessels for daily whale watching tours, fishing tours, private charters, and water taxi services. Primary duties include:
-Operating 6 pacs, Coast Guard Inspected 30ft, 35 ft, and 38 ft vessels
-Responsible for safety of passengers and crew
-Pre- and Post-trip cleaning / fueling of vessels
-Basic maintenance of vessels
-Practice responsible whale and wildlife viewing (following the Pacific Whale Watch Association Guidelines)
-Maintain ship’s log
-Punctuality in timing back-to-back tours
-Flexible for scheduling
-Capable of working long hours in physically demanding outdoor environment (expect long hours June-August)
-On larger vessels, responsible for overseeing the deckhand
-USCG Masters License or OUPV
-Current CPR / First Aid
-Subject to random drug testing
-Powerboat handling skills
-Mechanical comprehension and trouble shooting skills
-Effective communication skills
-Capable of working independently on small vessels and with a deckhand on larger vessels
-Capable of lifting 60 lbs
-Public speaking skills and strong communication skills
-Remains calm under pressure and capable of taking charge in emergency situations
-Fishing skills; understanding of and compliance with fishing regulations
-Previous guiding experience a plus
