Sail2Change is a nonprofit organization, aspiring to improve community equity by empowering our youth through access, opportunity, authentic relationships, and alternative outdoor education.

We offer alternative outdoor education, which includes wilderness survival training and sailing courses, for under-served high school aged youth. Our mission is to provide an opportunity to learn new skills, build self-confidence, and become a successful member of the community, all while immersing youth in the beauty of the great Pacific Northwest. Sail2Change is seeking wilderness guides for a 5 week summer camp. Guides must be available the week before camp starts (week 1) for training, team building, and development of curriculum. This is paid training; starting on July 20th. Training will take place in Portland, Oregon. We will depart from Portland together on the 26th, for the Rogue River–Siskiyou National Forest.

The first day of camp is July 27th, 2020, last day of camp is August 21st, 2020. If you are not available for the full 5 weeks, you can apply to guide for 3 weeks (Training + one session.)
The camp is split into two sessions: Weeks 2-3 are dedicated to male students, and weeks 4-5 are dedicated to the female program. Guides who apply for the full five weeks will have a two day break between the male and female sessions.

Job Summary:
Wilderness guides will instruct and supervise groups of 9th graders as they immerse themselves in the wilderness for the first time. Guides will provide presentations and with support from staff on topics such as edible plants, building fires and shelters, navigation, ecology, and a few others depending on your expertise. Guides will stay in the wilderness for the duration of the camp and take part in all activities such as hiking, cooking, game time, swimming, etc. Guides need to be able to hike a minimum of 5 miles per day for a 7 day period. We are seeking candidates who:
Have 2 years minimum wilderness and leadership experience in outdoor education and/or expedition-based youth programs
Have experience working with diverse and at-risk populations
Comfortable implementing behavior management strategies and acting as a leader
Are familiar with the Pacific Northwest
Knowledge of First Aid
Wilderness First Responder Certified
Enjoy working with teens of various socioeconomic backgrounds
Have excellent communication and organizational skills
Practice with outdoor therapy programs
Outdoor Navigation Skills
Knowledge of:

Leave-no-Trace Ethics
Map and Compass Navigation
Forest Fire Ecology
Shelter Building
Wildlife Safety
Pacific Northwest Wildlife and Tracking

Expedition & Travel Experience

Provide input on presentation topics and activities with the guidance of the Program Director
Support staff on topics such as edible plants, building fires and shelters, navigation, ecology, and a few others depending on your expertise.
Supervise students in your small group, as well are during whole group activities
Assist with set up, wake up time, cooking, enforcing rules, mentoring campers
Fostering an environment of inclusivity and acceptance
Facilitating activities and free time, icebreakers
Communicate effectively on all issues with Program Director and fellow staff

Salary: $850 weekly stipend
