Job Description

Title:  Youth Crew Leader Development Program (CLDP) AmeriCorps Member
Location: Durango, CO
Start/end date: April 1st – August 9th, 2019; Alternative start date of April 22nd available on a case-by-case basis
Wages: AmeriCorps Living stipend of $400 a week + an AmeriCorps Education Award of $2,255.24 upon successful completion of the program.
Benefits:  3 days’ discretionary time, 2 days PTO built in. Food provided while in the field, uniforms, personal protective equipment. Mental Health First Aid training, Wilderness First Aid and CPR/AED training minimum*, S-212 Chainsaw training for members who start April 2nd.
*Wilderness Medicine: CLDP members who can commit to the full period from April 1st – August 9th will be provided with Wilderness First Responder/CPR/AED training. There will be a WFR course available in Durango from March 22nd - 29th, through Desert Mountain Medicine. Other acceptable WFR Courses and Re-certification Courses can be reimbursed up to $650, but must be taken prior to the start of the season. CLDP Members that start April 22nd will receive a Wilderness First Aid/CPR/AED Training.

Southwest Conservation Corps empowers individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities and the environment.  SCC operates conservation service programs across Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico with offices in Durango and Salida, CO, Gallup, Acoma, and Zuni, NM. SCC has broad program offerings including individual intern placements in natural resource positions as well as crew based conservation service programs for youth 14-18, young adults, and post 9-11 era Veterans. SCC programs are rooted in the communities served, addressing local public land issues and working to meet local community needs and interests. SCC programs encourage environmental stewardship, foster community partnerships, and emphasize experiential learning.

Position Summary: The AmeriCorps (A*C) Crew Leader Development Program (CLDP) is a two phase program.  The first phase focuses on orientation, training and development, the second phase focuses on implementation and continued leadership development. The AmeriCorps CLDP provides young adults the opportunity to develop outdoor conservation and leadership skills; participants will be exposed to a variety of conservation projects, leadership experiences, and service opportunities on public lands and in local communities throughout the Southwest region of Colorado.

SCC’s Youth CLDP will spend the first half of their season in a crew leader training period, which will include a Leadership skills week, an S-212 Chainsaw training, technical trails training, a youth crew leader training, and prep weeks in addition to project work. In June, leaders will transition to co-leading two 4-week sessions with high school students ages 14-18. Each session will be Monday-Friday, and may be a camping crew or a day crew. Crews will complete local conservation and community agricultural based projects that may include: trail construction & maintenance, habitat improvement and invasive species removal, re-vegetation, fencing carpentry, gardening and local environmental service projects.

Crew leaders are responsible for the physical safety and emotional well-being of their crew, project management and implementation, creating developmental and educational opportunities, completing program paperwork each week. Camping crews prepare all their own meals and work together as a group to complete all the necessary chores. Day Crew Leaders will have a camping location and food provided during the work week.
