Job Description

The Great Basin is seeking an experienced individual to serve as Director of Education and Field Studies Program. GBI is seeking a visionary leader who will develop and implement a well- coordinated strategy to advance the education and public outreach mission of the Galena Creek and Taylor Creek Visitor Centers. The Director will be expected to lead the development and implementation of the strategy through strategic partnerships, staff deployment and accountability.

The Great Basin Institute works in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service and Washoe County to encourage understanding, appreciation and appropriate use of the natural, cultural and historical resources at Galena Creek and Taylor Creek Visitor Centers, both located in the Lake Tahoe region. GBI’s educational programs include community presentations, school field studies, and school and school break camps.

Duties and Responsibilities – To be successful in this position, candidates must be familiar with effective practices in informal science education, camp administration and public outreach. Proven leadership ability and outstanding oral and written communications skills are required. Specific duties include the following; other duties to be assigned at the discretion of the Executive Director.

Compensation and Benefits:
Annual Salary between $38,000 and $45,000, depending on qualifications.
Benefits include: ACA compliant health, dental and vision insurance provided at no cost to employee, optional 401(k) enrollment with employer match, paid holidays, paid personal leave and sick time.
Trainings provided include but are not limited to: 20-hour Camp Director ACA Course; First aid; and CPR course.

Timeline: Begins as soon as the successful candidate is identified.

Leadership – Take a leadership role in the following areas:
Strategic planning and oversight for the education programs for K-12 students;
Strategic planning and oversight for community outreach programs;
Liase with teachers and administrators to plan, promote and implement discovery-based, outdoor education tied to NGSS ;
Research and implement effective program and student evaluations;
Collaborate with GBI leadership to support development activities and generate funding.

Management – Work collaboratively with staff to:
Supervise and mentor Coordinators, Naturalists, volunteers and interns in implementation of school field studies, school break camps and community outreach
Administer the Spring, Summer and Fall Break Science Exploration Camps, day and residential;
Set concrete goals and identify resources needed to attain those goals ;
Plan and manage budgets;
Maintain existing and develop new grantor relationships, submit grants, proposals and reports in a complete, timely, accurate and compelling fashion.

Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in education, administration and/or the natural sciences;
Two years’ minimum experience with day and residential camps;
One year’s minimum experience in program management/coordination;
Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
Enthusiasm and commitment to youth outdoor education;
Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, and work in all types of weather conditions.
Ability to pass a FBI fingerprint check and National Sex Offender Public Registry name search.
