The Phoenix (www.thephoenix.org) is a non-profit organization with operations in 22 states (yes, we realize it’s confusing our name is the same as the city we’re now launching in!). We are looking to scale our national impact and have a goal of reaching over one million people by 2025. As our Phoenix, AZ Instructor, you’ll contribute to this growth in Phoenix and the surrounding region. You will oversee launch of new programming operations and expand our reach in underserved communities.
The primary responsibility of the Instructor is to deliver quality classes and help to build The Phoenix community in Phoenix, AZ. This role will deploy Phoenix’s program activation strategy, which includes recruiting and establishing volunteer instructors and ensuring quality programming. Excellent social skills and the ability to connect with partner organizations, participants, and the general public are essential. The ideal candidate will have the ability to instruct in one or more athletic disciplines, including CrossFit, boxing, group fitness, yoga, hiking, cycling, social events, rock climbing, mountain biking, running, etc.
This position will focus on delivering quality programs and helping to build The Phoenix community in Phoenix, AZ. The ideal candidate is skilled in cultivating, building, and nurturing relationships with participants to ensure that programming offered is consistent with The Phoenix mission and core values. ESSENTIAL DUTIES RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead multiple events each week such as CrossFit, boxing, yoga, Pilates, dance, hiking, biking, and running
Under supervision of the Start-Up Manager, facilitate Phoenix programs, including free community programs, volunteer programs, and contracted partnership programming with partner organizations
Train and mentor additional instructors as program needs increase
Ensure quality at all classes and events by cultivating relationships, supporting volunteers, and maintaining positive relationships with community partners
Facilitate targeted outreach events, identify outreach opportunities, and schedule events
Help build and support a robust volunteer program, including recruiting, training, and supporting a solid and sustainable base of volunteer support
Ensure that all programs and program spaces are trauma-informed (fun, emotionally and physically safe, inclusive and accessible), reflect The Phoenix’s core values and community standards, and adhere to program and discipline-specific standards
Assist with general daily administrative duties of The Phoenix
Attend and participate in local and national staff and team meetings
Utilize various technology and social media platforms
Complete other duties as assigned
Work evening and weekend hours as needed
Passion for recovery from substance use disorder
Experience coaching, instructing, or leading in one or more of the above-named disciplines
Organizational, communication and time management skills, as well as professionalism and ability to quickly adapt to change
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to people from all walks of life
Community relation skills and willingness to initiate introductions with potential partners
Entrepreneurial spirit, humility, and integrity
Ability to use standard office equipment and computer software, including word processing, spreadsheet applications, and email
Knowledge and consistent demonstration of excellent customer service skills
Certifications in personal training, CrossFit, yoga, rock-climbing or other athletic disciplines (e.g., YT-200, CF-L1, L-2, or L-3; NASM, NSCA, ACSM, or ACE; kettlebell or Olympic lifting)
Lived experience as a peer in recovery
Connections to recovery-centered organizations in the Phoenix area
Certification in other relevant disciplines (AMGA-CWI, SPI, or Rock Guide; IMBA-L1; etc.)
First Aid Certification (e.g. WFR, WFA, CPR)
Ability to facilitate music-themed events
