Other Outdoor paragliding apprenticeship
Job Description
Opportunity for a career in paragliding. This is a long-term committment and begins as a 2-year apprenticeship. This is a small business which is looking to fill 2 apprenticeship positions. Apprentices will be based in south-central PA but domestic and international travel is necessary. Apprentices will be taught how to paraglide, then progress toward the refinement of flying skills, and eventually be trained as paragliding instructors and guides. The following is an estimated timeline in which the individual would be able to progress, based upon how most people progress:
Initial training to become a licensed pilot: 1-2 months
Refinement of skills to an intermediate rating: 1-year
Ratings/experience to become an instructor: 2-years
Refinement of skills to an advanced rating and entry-level guiding: 3-years
Tandem rating: 3 years
So essentially, the individual would serve as an apprentice for about 2 years where I would invest in their training and pay for their travel. During this time period, room and board is covered and a vehicle is provided. Most of the flying will occur in the mid-atlantic region, but there will be travel to all over the U.S. and world. They will learn to fly and eventually become a paragliding instructor and will begin to serve as a guide on paragliding tours at flying sites all over the world. During the winter months, they will be located in foreign countries for 4-6 months flying, conducting tours, and training pilots. There will be quite a bit of travel involved, there will be flying, and there will be interacting with people from many different cultures/backgrounds.
Preferred characteristics include:
- Does not have to be in good physical condition, but will have to get in decent condition because there is much hiking in extreme terrain.
- No drug or alcohol problems.
- Willingness to travel and ability to obtain a passport.
- Ability to teach/guide individuals from all ethnic/religious/etc.. backgrounds.
- Willingness to learn foreign languages (Employer will pay for courses).
- Possess or be able to obtain a driver’s license.
- Be willing to fly in the air, often, and hopefully like it.
During the apprenticeship, there will be other seasonal jobs on the side like a small lawn mowing business and photography to earn additional funds. This is not a business to become rich, but it is a career to see the world from a view that very few people have seen.
